Originally known as the "Mixito", the Cuban Sandwich was a creation of Tampa's cigarworkers in the 1890's. The Spanish brought the fine ham, the Sicilians brought the Genoa salami, the Cubans brought the mojo marinated roast pork, and the Germans brought the Swiss Cheese, mustard, and pickle. Named the "Signature Sandwich" of the city of Tampa by Tampa City Council Members in 2012.
A "Face Off" in Tampa was held to determine the best Cuban sandwich. Among some fierce competition, forty plus restaurants some as far away as Miami, we at Cafe' Masaryktown placed 3rd in the "Traditional Category" (see the plaque in our lobby). Our sandwiches are generally pressed and, like a fine blended wine, each ingredient is balanced to produce a specific taste. So enjoy your Cuban and don't forget to top it off with a demitasse of espresso.
